2010 'Schools on Board' Arctic Climate Change Youth Forum
200 high school students and teachers from 27 schools and educational institutions in Manitoba joined us for a day of science, music and environmental learning related to Arctic climate change research. Over 20 scientists and grad students from the University of Manitoba and the ArcticNet Student Association, conducted fieldwork sessions on the frozen lakes of the FortWhyte Alive outdoor education center that simulated methods used in Arctic research. Sessions included ice coring; sampling snow for mercury; water quality testing; sediment coring; weather observations; solar energy balance and albedo; beluga studies; Inuit use of sea ice; Inuit observations of climate change. This event was directly linked to the IPY-CFL study and the upcoming IPY Polar Week.
