Lecture on Polar Research & Climate Change

As a part of the Education & Outreach and Antarctica Day, Suhas Shetye (Excom) had organised lecture on Polar Research and Climate Change in a school in Goa on 27th november in view of the Antarctica day. The students were so much interested in knowing about the polar research and had so much to ask Not only the students but even the teachers and the principal were involved in the interection. The schools hall was completely full and some of them had to made to seat on the floor.Students were given full freedom to ask what ever they wanted to ask and lots of questions were asked and some of them were really good, keeping their age in mind. Suhas was able to inspire a lot of young minds towards Polar Research. Few of the questions asked were as follows. What does APECS actually do?How much time it takes to reach from India to Antarctica? As u said the temperature is minus, how we stay in such conditions? What do the penguins eat?How can we find the age from CaCO3 shells? What about the acid rain effects? When the ice packs are formed how will the concentration of CO2 be below the ice?How did I feel when I first time reached Antarctica? How we take our food to Antarctica for so many days?Is the climate actually changing? How much will the sea level rise in 5 years, will it in cm or in meter? What effect the melting of ice in arctic have on us?How did I get inspired in working in Antarctica?Walruses are more powerfull than polar bear, but how can the bear attack the walruses? How does the penguin store heat? What is the minimum temperature that penguins can survive?
