Wurde 43 v. Chr. von den Römern unter dem Namen Lugdunum (Hügel des Lichts oder Hügel der Raben: die Etymologie ist nach wie vor umstritten) als Verwaltungszentrum Galliens gegründert; vorher bestand jedoch bereits eine keltische Siedlung. Diese Rolle hatte die Stadt über drei Jahrhunderte inne, bevor ihre Bedeutung im Zuge des Untergans des Römischen Reiches zurückging.
