Moulin Rouge

THEN: The Moulin Rogue was and is located in Montmartre. Located on a large hill, in the 1920s Montmartre was largely a working class section of Paris. The hill was home to over 26 mills, including Montmartre’s most notorious night club, the Moulin Rouge. The Moulin Rouge is nestled against Rue Pigalle, located on the southern “city side” of the hill which hosted a variety of jazz joints in the 1920s. From the summer of 1926 to September 1, 1929, the Moulin Rogue hosted the second black American musical production Lew Leslie’s “Blackbirds.” While Parisians felt the production took second place to “La Revue Nègre,” the first African American musical production, they still were enchanted by the musical talents of Florence Mills, Adelaide Hall and Sidney Bechet. In 1929 the French jazz magazine “Documents” claimed that the “Blackbirds” performance at the Moulin Rouge was the only place “where the spirit of the music is currently saved in Paris.”
NOW: The Moulin Rouge still remains the Moulin Rogue and is located in an area with several sex shops. It is also a very popular tourist stop.
