Nusakambangan Island Prison
Fifty-two inmates on death row are currently imprisoned at a number of super maximum security prisons on Nusakambangan Island in Cilacap regency, Central Java, an official said. <br /><br />Forty-three of the inmates are sentenced to death for drug-related crimes, head of the correctional institution at the Central Java Law and Human Rights Agency, Bambang Winahyo, said in the provincial capital Semarang. <br /><br />"Of these 43, 34 are foreign citizens. They come from the Netherlands, India, Pakistan, Nigeria and a few other countries," Bambang said recently. <br /><br />For example, an inmate from Malaysia, Thun Tuck Yin alias Atjayi, was sent to Nusakambangan in 1994 and has been imprisoned there ever since, he said. <br /><br />"The inmates can be executed anytime. It's up to the Attorney General's Office." <br /><br />The three Bali bombers -- Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra -- are among those on death row at Nusakambangan. They reportedly will be executed after the Idul Fitri celebration. <br /><br />The inmates on death row in Nusakambangan, Bambang said, were classified into five different groups according to length of time spent in the prison: less than five years, between five and 10 years, between 10 and 15 years, between 15 and 20 years, and over 20 years. <br /><br />There are 36 inmates who have been in the prison for less than five years, 13 between five and 10 years, one between 10 and 15 years, and one over 20 years, Bambang said. <br /><br />"Amrozi and friends are in the category of between five and 10 years. They were sent there in 2002," he added. <br /><br />Inmate Suryadi Swabuana has spent between 15 and 20 years in prison. He was sentenced to death for murder and violent theft in Surabaya and Palembang. <br /><br />Inmate Bahar bin Matar, who was convicted of murdering, raping and kidnapping a family in Tembilahan, Riau, in 1970, has been at Nusakambangan for over 20 years. <br /><br />Bambang said he had met Bahan ma
