Two Sisters
The Best Corn Beef Hash in Gloucester<br /> The four of us, including my sister and her husband, drove through Gloucester, Mass.the other morning looking for a breakfast place. It was a gorgeous fall day. We love to go to the Cape, (this one being Cape Ann), in the off season.We passed Two Sisters Coffee Shop on Washington St. I said “that looks good” and Susie said, “ I don’t know, looks like a pastry place”. So we continued down the street, passing a joint called “Scroo Cooking” , then circled around and decided to try Two Sisters any way. Before we were 10 feet in front of the door, I knew this was what we were looking for.<br /> From the homey décor and rambunctious atmosphere, it was clear, this was working class Gloucester and the accent , unmistakable, “Do we have maahmalade? , Shoowa.”<br /> I was thrilled they offered fish cakes for breakfast and ordered a side order of one along with an over easy egg, home fries and rye toast. In fact we all ordered rye and our waitress suggested that since they make all of their own bread , we should try some others. I got the whole wheat, which was light and fluffy, fine. The rye was mild and the pumperknickel quite sweet.<br /> Jeffrey got the corn beef hash and it was, not only filled with substantial hunks of excellent corn beef, but it was constructed in quite a refined way. The beef was enclosed in a top and bottom layer of hash browns, like a flat cake. The outside was very crisp and the inside creamy and beefy. It was plain beef and potatoes in the best, possible way. The fish cake was fabulous: nicely fried, plenty of haddock. Like the hash, it was not overly seasoned, just sang of browned potatoes and fresh fish.
